A Surprising Early

Christmas Present!

Sometimes Christmas presents come early and in surprising ways.  This year my early and surprising Christmas present came from Suzanne who completed her PLACE coaching session the beginning of December with me.  I was thrilled that Suzanne, who isn’t even a member of our church YET wanted to get involved in three areas of ministry.  She is looking at serving in our Hospitality ministry, knitting ministry and food ministry.

And while I was thrilled to connect her to the ministry leaders over the three ministries this wasn’t my early and surprising Christmas present.  Two weeks ago, Suzanne asked me if I could sit with her grandson, Gabe who is in the 7th grade during our contemporary worship service as she attends a Bible study at our church during that worship time and then attends our blended worship service.  I immediately jumped at the opportunity to sit with Gabe.  Before the service I found out that this Sunday was the first time Gabe had ever attended church.  This past Sunday Gabe and I meet again for his second Sunday to attend church and I asked him where he wanted to sit.  He said on the front row.  As with his time the week before he was totally engaged in the service, especially the baptisms that took place during both Sunday worship services that he attended.  After the service he told me he would like to be baptized.  Before I took him to his Bible study class he and I went and opened the Bible and looked at the Scriptures that help a person commit their life to Christ.  I helped Gabe understand that baptism is a symbol of someone who has given their life to Christ.  Right in my office Gabe bowed his head and prayed to receive Christ.

Gabe and I went and found his grandmother during the worship service and told her what Gabe had done and yes tears flowed from Suzanne’s cheek as the three of us hugged.  Suzanne had bought Gabe a Bible for Christmas but told him she would give it to him early so he could start reading it.

Then on Monday morning I was walking to my office at church when the middle school pastor told me that Gabe walked into his small group Bible study right after he prayed to receive Christ and told the boys who he had just meet the week before about his decision to accept Christ.

I don’t know what will be under the Christmas tree for me this Christmas, but the Lord through PLACE, the ministry I have the privilege to be a part of for 24 years now gave me the greatest present I will receive this Christmas.  And wow, earlier this fall a young college student committed her life to Christ with me during a PLACE coaching session.

As I look to the new year I and PLACE Ministries would welcome the opportunity to serve you as we begin our 25th year of ministry.
