Assimilating People In Church 2024

Last week I hosted at my home a friend and ministry partner who pastors in Israel and serves on the executive board that oversees numerous churches and ministries in Israel. My pastor friend, Daniel and I were meeting with my senior pastor, Dr. Jeff Jackson where I serve as Pastor of Discipleship. My pastor asked Daniel what are some of the pressing needs you have in your congregation in Israel.

Daniel said his most pressing need and the most pressing need he sees in churches in Israel is to get people to be engaged and involved and not just attenders. After we discussed my pastor’s question and Daniel’s answer Daniel asked my pastor what was a pressing need in our church. My pastor said to get people engaged and involved and not just attenders who are consumers.

The three of us laughed as we realized whether you are pastoring a church in the United States or in Israel the issues and pressing needs are the same. People are people and the words of Jesus are as true today as when He said, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(Mark 10:45).

Human nature gravitates toward being served and not serving and as leaders we have to continually remind people that Jesus taught us we find our lives as we give them away (Matthew 16:25).

There could be an entire book or volume of books written on WHY there is a need for both the local and universal Body of Christ to get people engaged and involved. On second thought there are books and yes even volumes of books on WHY there is a need to get people and engaged and involved. For the sake of this article not being a volume of books or even one book I will keep one of the primary reasons to what Jesus Himself said in Matthew 16:25. Jesus said, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” You find your life as you give it

I have worn a bracelet since 1995 with Matthew 16:25 written on the front on the bracelet as God used those words of Jesus in 1995 to radically change my life.

Some of you reading this far (thank-you) know that in 1998 I founded PLACE Ministries to come alongside churches, organizations and individuals to help them answer the HOW to give their lives away based on HOW God uniquely created them.

Maybe you aren’t like me but even in my 27th year of PLACE Ministries and serving as the Pastor of Discipleship at my church I continually have to remind myself WHY it is so important to intentionally help people discover HOW God created them so they can give their life away and in giving find their life.

And while using the word “intentional” in closing if you are a church or ministry leader and would like to learn or get a refresher on creating and using an intentional process like PLACE to connect people to meaningful ministry I would love for you to join us August 8-9 in our offices in Atlanta for our next PLACE training.

We keep our trainings small and only have a few spots left for the August training. If you need more information please feel free to contact us at 1-877-463-2863.

The HOW in assimilating people in church today looks and feels much different than it did 20-25 years ago. It even looks different than it did 5 years ago. Even with the previous sentence I passionately believe the HOW still starts with helping people discover HOW God created them (Ephesians 2:10) in areas like personality, spiritual gifts, abilities, passions and life experiences. And once people discover HOW God created them providing an intentional process to help them get engaged and involved in ministry is vital and life changing.

The WHY has not changed in nearly 2000 years since Jesus spoke Matthew
16:25. We do find our lives as we give them away!
