How Do I Understand My Spiritual Gifts Assessment?

When you become a Christian, the Holy Spirit gives you a Spiritual Gift or Gifts. This assessment will help guide you in the process of discovering your Spiritual Gift(s). This assessment will not tell you definitely if you do or do not have a certain Gift. For many, it will help confirm the Gift(s) they may believe they have, and for others it will begin the journey of discovering their Gifts. For everyone, it will be an illustration of the incredible love God has in giving His children Gifts to carry out their ministry here on earth.

You may score high in one area of the assessment because you have a passion for a particular area of ministry that correlates with a Spiritual Gift. For example, you may have a passion for evangelism, but you may not necessarily have the Gift of evangelism. Training and life experiences can cause a person to score high in a Gift. Our motives can also cause the assessment scores to be high or low for a particular Gift. Keep in mind there are many roles that all Christians are commanded by God to carry out, even if we are not Gifted in the area. For example, we are all called to share our faith even if we do not possess the Gift of evangelism. God will always equip us to carry out each role that He expects us to fulfill.

In completing this assessment, the following principles will help you discover your Spiritual Gift(s):

  • Believe you have a Spiritual Gift(s).
  • Ask God to reveal your Spiritual Gift(s).
  • Study the Scriptures relating to Spiritual Gifts.
  • Explore possibilities by serving short-term in various ministries.
  • Evaluate your effectiveness as you explore possibilities.
  • Expect confirmation by others.
  • Examine your feelings as you explore possibilities.
  • Examine your motives for using a Gift.

If you have been a Christian for less than one year, it may be difficult for you to answer some of the questions because many are based on past experiences. Take heart, you do have a Gift(s). As God gives you ministry opportunities in which to serve, your Gift(s) will be revealed to you. Your Gifts do not change over time. Your experiences will change, however, which will often change the results of an assessment like the following one.
